I have always wanted to surf again. I remember I surfed in La Union almost 4 years ago and it never happened again. Part of my bucket list is to spend a week of non-stop surfing. Haha. And so I planned to go to La Union on my own during the Holy Week. I booked my stay at Flotsam and Jetsam Hostel which is a perfect place for solo travelers. I have always wanted to travel alone and I thought that this was the perfect opportunity for me to rediscover myself. However, it didn’t go as planned. Jon decided to tag along since he doesn’t want me to travel alone. And we spent the whole week together just relaxing and swimming and making new friends and we have also discovered a new place that we both love. This is what I love about travelling, just going wherever your feet takes you, and discovering a new beautiful and relaxing place.
The look on our hotel: Flotsam and Jetsam Hostel
It is a new addition to one of the many resorts in San Juan. Although it’s far from the surfing spot, the relaxed architectural feel of the hostel is worth the walk. Think, Bali: Nipa huts, social huts, hammock, stack of surf boards, etc. The place was designed to include socialization as part of your vacation.
Aside from San Juan, we went to Bacnotan. We also checked the surfing spot there. However, the beach was calm so we just decided to go to my Lola’s farm and picked mangoes. Hehe. We were served lunch by Tita Marlyn and we were also toured around San Fernando. That same night, Celina, my colleague dropped by our hotel and brought us to San Fernando for dinner and toured us at Thunderbird. She also took us to their restaurant and of course munched on delicious food. It’s a good thing we know people within the vicinity and we had free food for lunch and dinner. Haha.
Then the fun and adventure began at San Gabriel. We decided to check the falls that the locals have been telling about. So instead of a tricycle ride worth 500 from San Juan, we decided to just get in a jeepney and discover our way to San Gabriel. It was a bad decision by the way, since we ended up spending more than 500 bucks to pay for the tricycle and tour guide. Nonetheless, we enjoyed it there and loved the adventure. It was a tiring one and a half trek towards the falls. We went there around noon, so just imagine how hot and exhausting it was for us (and burnt!). Haha! But then when we saw the falls, viola! It was soooo beautiful that we both agreed that the exhaustion is all worth it! We even found a cliff where one can dive. Jon did. Twice. I didn’t because he was scared for me, than I am for myself. So, I passed up the chance to jump at the cliff, just because I don’t want him to worry.
So what happened to a week of surfing? It didn’t happen! Haha because the waters were calm and there were no freaking waves! But even then, what happened in San Gabriel and what happened to us in La Union, was more than worth it. Instead of rediscovering myself, it was a rediscovering of a renewed passion for our love. As he said, we are better together. I couldn’t agree more.
I love you the moon and back hun! <3
