Golden retrievers are not bred to be guard dogs, and considering the size of their hearts and their irrepressible joy in life, they are less likely to bite than to bark, less likely to bark than to lick a hand in greeting. In spite of their size, they think they are lap dogs, and in spite of being dogs, they think they are also human, and nearly every human they meet is judged to have the potential to be a boon companion who might, at many moment, cry, “Let’s go!” and lead them on a great adventure.

MALINAO, AKLAN

After how many weeks of being separated from each other, going to Jon’s hometown just brings so much excitement and happiness to me. Of course I missed my boyfriend a lot. I being in Manila, and him taking a vacation at his hometown for weeks, just really made me excited to see him. The original plan is to go to Boracay with friends but he told to me stay at his home for a day and we’ll follow in Boracay.

I arrived in Kalibo around 5:00 am in the morning since we took the earliest flight. My hun picked me up at the airport and we went straight to his home. It was my third time at his home, but it was the first time that I got to see places in his hometown. We ate breakfast and then his dad, Jon and I went to their farm. I really wanted to visit their farm since I have heard a lot about it from Tita. What I really enjoyed most is fishing! I got 2 fishes! Haha. I also loved feeding the fishes and ducks because it is something that you don’t normally do in the city. After visiting the farm, we drove around Malinao and its nearby towns. It’s so nice to see a vast land of greens and fields; it is just too pleasing to the eyes. It was so nice to hear stories about the place and a part of its history.

Since I was already feeling tired and sleepy, we went straight home and rested for a while. I took a shower and a power nap, then, Tita already called us for lunch. Tita always prepare delicious meals and of course, she will not forget my favorite pasayan or shrimp. She made it extra spicy. She also cooked oysters, crabs, grilled fish, and my Hun’s fave, Inubaran, which is a local Aklanon chicken delicacy. Of course, as usual, I ate a lot. Seafood is my weakness.

A couple of hours rest, and we went to their beach house. Unfortunately, their rest house was destroyed by typhoon Yolanda and there was no water as well, so we decided not to swim. We took another road trip showing nearby towns and also focused on Malinao proper. Malinao is such a beauty. As my boyfriend told me, the town’s architectural and geographical spaces were created during the Spanish era, it was as if I was on a different era. I loved it there. It was peaceful and relaxing. It was quiet and it really does make you forget about the busy life in the city. I’ll see you soon Malinao in January.

Crossing this one out of my bucket list!

TOUR AROUND MALINAO

LA UNION

I have always wanted to surf again. I remember I surfed in La Union almost 4 years ago and it never happened again. Part of my bucket list is to spend a week of non-stop surfing. Haha. And so I planned to go to La Union on my own during the Holy Week. I booked my stay at Flotsam and Jetsam Hostel which is a perfect place for solo travelers. I have always wanted to travel alone and I thought that this was the perfect opportunity for me to rediscover myself. However, it didn’t go as planned. Jon decided to tag along since he doesn’t want me to travel alone. And we spent the whole week together just relaxing and swimming and making new friends and we have also discovered a new place that we both love. This is what I love about travelling, just going wherever your feet takes you, and discovering a new beautiful and relaxing place.

The look on our hotel: Flotsam and Jetsam Hostel

It is a new addition to one of the many resorts in San Juan. Although it’s far from the surfing spot, the relaxed architectural feel of the hostel is worth the walk. Think, Bali: Nipa huts, social huts, hammock, stack of surf boards, etc. The place was designed to include socialization as part of your vacation.

Aside from San Juan, we went to Bacnotan. We also checked the surfing spot there. However, the beach was calm so we just decided to go to my Lola’s farm and picked mangoes. Hehe. We were served lunch by Tita Marlyn and we were also toured around San Fernando. That same night, Celina, my colleague dropped by our hotel and brought us to San Fernando for dinner and toured us at Thunderbird. She also took us to their restaurant and of course munched on delicious food. It’s a good thing we know people within the vicinity and we had free food for lunch and dinner. Haha.

Then the fun and adventure began at San Gabriel. We decided to check the falls that the locals have been telling about. So instead of a tricycle ride worth 500 from San Juan, we decided to just get in a jeepney and discover our way to San Gabriel. It was a bad decision by the way, since we ended up spending more than 500 bucks to pay for the tricycle and tour guide. Nonetheless, we enjoyed it there and loved the adventure. It was a tiring one and a half trek towards the falls. We went there around noon, so just imagine how hot and exhausting it was for us (and burnt!). Haha! But then when we saw the falls, viola! It was soooo beautiful that we both agreed that the exhaustion is all worth it! We even found a cliff where one can dive. Jon did. Twice. I didn’t because he was scared for me, than I am for myself. So, I passed up the chance to jump at the cliff, just because I don’t want him to worry.

So what happened to a week of surfing? It didn’t happen! Haha because the waters were calm and there were no freaking waves! But even then, what happened in San Gabriel and what happened to us in La Union, was more than worth it. Instead of rediscovering myself, it was a rediscovering of a renewed passion for our love. As he said, we are better together. I couldn’t agree more.

I love you  the moon and back hun! <3
